LAW6156   Refugees and Displaced Persons in International Law   (15 credits)

Description

This module will equip students to critically analyse the legal challenges brought about by refugee and forced displacement scenarios. The module will be formed of three parts. Part I will introduce students to the fundamental principles of International Refugee Law, exploring topics such as the 1951 Refugee Convention, regional asylum systems (Europe, Africa, Latin America), and complementary protection. Part II will focus on the protection (or lack thereof) of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) under international law. Part III will examine the issues of statelessness, nationality, and the protection of stateless persons. Delivery will be by seminars with prescribed readings, and guest lecturers working in various fields of Refugee Law and the Protection of Displaced Persons will be invited to address the class. Assessment will be by way of Moot Court, divided into a written (50%) and oral (50%) component.
